Botox is a purefied protein derived from botulinum toxin type A. It is FDA approved for injection into certain facial muscles to relax the muscle and eliminate wrinkles. In the quantities used for this purpose, it is very safe, especially when administered by a trained oculoplastic surgeon.
When small amounts of Botox are directly injected into muscles that cause wrinkles such as the lines between the eyebrows, the muscle weakens and is unable to contract fully to produce the wrinkle.
The goal with Botox is to treat the muscle and prevent the dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles. It helps to soften wrinkles and smooth out the skin, NOT to freeze the muscle completely and eliminate facial expression. The results usually last around 3 months.
Botox and Xeomin
Both botulinum toxins are injected in similar ways and are safe for use in the face. Botulinum toxin is safe for cosmetic injections because the dose injected is small and because the medication doesn’t get absorbed systemically. Botox has been used as a non-surgical cosmetic injectable for many years and most doctors consider it very safe. It was actually initially used in the muscles that are around the eye and thus is very safe in the skin.
Common questions:
Does it hurt?
Botox is usually placed with a very small needle and the volume given is small so although it feels like a small pinch, it is over within few seconds.
When does it start working?
Botox starts working 3-5 days after injected and reaches its peak effect at 1 week after the injection.
What are the side effects?
Patients can experience a little pain and occasional swelling. Rarely a droopy eyelid can occur. If this occurs there is a temporary treatment for it.
How long does it last?
In most people, the effects last 3 months. It is possible that after long term use, the muscle permanently weakens and thus less botox is necessary.
How does it work?
Botox works by weakening the muscles that cause wrinkles. Wrinkles start as dynamic lines, lines only visible when facial movement cause them. Over time, dynamic lines become static lines, wrinkles present even when there is no facial movement. The goal with Botox, is to address dynamic lines so they never become static lines.
Are there discounts for Botox?
When surgeons administer Botox, the price is usually consistent, however Brilliant Distinctions and other rewards programs help regular customers with coupons and rebates
